“Decade Lost in Betrayal”: Kharge Urges J&K Voters to Reclaim Future in Crucial Polls

As J&K Votes, Kharge Warns of a Decade Lost in Betrayal, Urges for Democratic Revival

NEW DELHI, Sept 25: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge made a strong appeal to the voters of Jammu and Kashmir as the region heads into the second phase of its crucial assembly elections. Urging the electorate to reflect on the “decade lost in betrayal,” Kharge highlighted how the state was reduced to a Union Territory, marking a significant downgrading in its status. He reminded voters of the unresolved issues plaguing Jammu and Kashmir, including rising unemployment, rampant corruption, and the erosion of land rights and social justice.

Addressing the voters through a post on X, Kharge emphasized the power of democracy and the need for a decisive vote to secure the future of the region. “As the second phase of voting begins for 26 assembly seats, I encourage the people of Jammu and Kashmir to come out in large numbers and exercise their democratic rights,” he said. He added, “When you press the button on the EVM, remember the decade lost to betrayal—how a state was stripped of its status and relegated to a Union Territory for the first time in history.”

Kharge highlighted that these elections represent a pivotal moment for Jammu and Kashmir, offering a chance for positive change. “A vote for change is a vote to secure your constitutional rights and future welfare,” he remarked, also welcoming first-time voters with optimism, urging them to vote for a better future.

The second phase of elections sees over 2.5 million voters deciding the fate of 239 candidates, including former chief minister Omar Abdullah, across 26 constituencies. Voting commenced at 7 am, amidst tight security.

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also addressed the voters, calling the right to vote the most fundamental democratic right. In her post on X, she reminded the people of Jammu and Kashmir of the restrictions they have faced in the past decade. “Your right to raise your voice on critical issues like electricity, water, roads, employment, and land was taken away from you. But today, you have the opportunity to choose a government that can restore those rights,” she urged.

Kharge and Priyanka’s remarks underscore the significance of these elections for the future of Jammu and Kashmir. Both leaders called on voters to use their ballots to drive meaningful change, restore constitutional rights, and secure a brighter, more prosperous future for the region.
