AAP Joins Hands with NC-Congress Alliance in J&K, Extends Formal Support Post Elections

SRINAGAR, Oct 11: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has officially announced its support for the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) following the victory of the NC-Congress alliance in the recently concluded assembly elections in the Union Territory. In a significant political development, AAP submitted a formal letter of support to the Lieutenant Governor, confirming its decision to back Omar Abdullah’s leadership in the newly formed Legislative Assembly.

The AAP currently has one Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Jammu and Kashmir. Party candidate Mehraj Malik secured a notable victory in the Doda constituency, defeating the BJP’s Gajay Singh Rana by a margin of 4,538 votes. Malik’s win marks a crucial foothold for AAP in the region, and his support could play a strategic role in shaping the coalition’s direction and policies.

The NC-Congress alliance emerged as the dominant force in the Union Territory’s elections, securing an absolute majority by winning a combined total of 49 seats. The JKNC led the alliance with 42 seats, while the Congress contributed six seats to the tally. On Thursday, the JKNC unanimously elected Omar Abdullah as the leader of its Legislative Party, solidifying his position at the helm of the alliance’s legislative agenda.

AAP’s decision to align with the JKNC reflects its commitment to supporting the coalition’s efforts to address key issues in Jammu and Kashmir. This alliance aims to further the political and developmental goals of the Union Territory, ensuring a collaborative approach in the newly formed Assembly.
