AAP Raises Voices Against Delayed Assembly Elections: Calls for Restoration of Elected Government in Jammu and Kashmir
29-05-2023 : The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) took to the streets on Monday to express their discontent and frustration with the Election Commission of India (ECI) over the delay in conducting Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Led by senior party leader Taranjit Singh Tony and former minister Yaspal Kundal, the protest gathered outside Nirvachan Bhawan in Jammu, where the ECI’s office is located.
During the protest, the AAP leaders raised slogans criticizing the ECI and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), accusing the election body of being a mere puppet in the hands of the ruling party. They expressed their demand for the ECI to function independently and ensure a fair and timely electoral process in Jammu and Kashmir.
Speaking to the reporters present, Tony emphasized the party’s concerns, stating that while the ECI was prompt in conducting elections for panchayats, corporations, town area committees, Members of Parliament, District Development Councils (DDCs), and Block Development Councils (BDCs), it had failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the delay in holding Assembly elections. He questioned the Commission, seeking clarity on the obstacles preventing the timely conduct of the Assembly elections.
Highlighting the importance of a democratic government in Jammu and Kashmir, Tony asserted the need for justice and the restoration of an elected government in the Union Territory. The absence of an elected assembly has left the people without a legitimate voice and representation, further emphasizing the urgency of conducting the Assembly elections.
The AAP’s protest against the ECI’s delay in organizing Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir serves as a reminder of the party’s commitment to democratic values and the rights of the people. By expressing their grievances and demanding transparency and independence in the electoral process, the AAP seeks to hold accountable those responsible for the delay and ensure that the people of Jammu and Kashmir are not deprived of their democratic rights.
