JAMMU, Oct 12: In a significant breakthrough, Jammu and Kashmir Police in RS Pura have arrested a fugitive who had been evading capture for nearly two years in connection with a serious criminal case. The accused, Showkat Hussain alias Shonku, a resident of Magar Khad, Tehsil and District Kathua, and currently residing in Ward No. 12, Parliwand near Government High School Kathua, was wanted in FIR No. 68/2023 registered under Sections 363, 376, and 109 of the IPC and Sections 3, 4, 16, and 17 of the POCSO Act at Police Station RS Pura.
According to police officials, the accused had been absconding since the registration of the case and had successfully evaded law enforcement efforts for two years. The Fast Track Court (Rape and POCSO cases) had earlier issued a warrant for his arrest under Section 299 of the CrPC after he repeatedly failed to appear before the court. Acting on a specific tip-off, a special police team led by Inspector R.S. Parihar, SHO RS Pura, launched a well-coordinated operation and successfully apprehended the accused from his hideout.
Police sources said the operation was the culmination of sustained surveillance and intelligence gathering. “The accused had been changing his locations frequently to avoid arrest. However, after verifying credible inputs, our team swiftly executed the arrest warrant issued by the court,” a senior police officer said.
Following his arrest, Showkat Hussain was produced before the Fast Track Court (Rape and POCSO cases) in Jammu, where the judge ordered his judicial remand. In compliance with the court’s directions, the accused has been lodged in District Jail Amphalla.
Police have reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring that those accused of crimes against women and minors are brought to justice without delay. “The Jammu and Kashmir Police remain steadfast in their mission to uphold the law and protect vulnerable sections of society. No offender, however long they evade the system, will escape the reach of justice,” the statement added.
The arrest marks a crucial step in strengthening accountability and judicial enforcement in sensitive cases involving sexual violence. Authorities emphasized that strict action will continue against those attempting to evade prosecution in similar offences, as part of the broader campaign to ensure the safety and dignity of women and children in the Union Territory.
