JAMMU, FEBRUARY 6: The Anti-Corruption Bureau Jammu on Friday trapped and arrested an Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) of the Jammu and Kashmir Police in district Jammu for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹5,000.
According to an official statement, FIR No. 02/2026 has been registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 against Mohinder Lal, who was posted at Police Station Khour.
The case stems from a complaint alleging that the accused public servant had demanded illegal gratification from the complainant for taking action against the husband of the complainant’s cousin sister. The woman was reportedly being regularly harassed and assaulted by her husband, and the complainant had approached the police seeking intervention. Instead of performing his lawful duty, the ASI allegedly asked for a bribe in exchange for initiating action in the matter.
Unwilling to succumb to the demand, the complainant approached the Anti-Corruption Bureau Jammu and lodged a formal complaint, seeking legal action against the accused official.
On receipt of the complaint, the ACB carried out a discreet verification, which confirmed the demand of bribe by the ASI. After establishing the authenticity of the allegations, a formal case was registered at Police Station ACB Jammu and a detailed investigation was initiated.
During the course of investigation, a trap team was constituted. The team laid a carefully planned trap and caught the accused red-handed while demanding and accepting the bribe amount of ₹5,000 from the complainant in the presence of independent witnesses.
Following the successful trap, the accused was arrested on the spot after completing all legal formalities, and the tainted money was recovered from his possession.
In addition, a search was conducted at the official residence of the accused, located within the premises of Police Station Khour, in the presence of a Magistrate, as part of the ongoing investigation.
Officials said further investigation is underway to ascertain whether the accused was involved in similar acts of corruption in other cases and to identify any additional angles linked to the offence.
