Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit Named Next Vice Chief of the Indian Air Force

New Delhi, June 5: The Government has appointed Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit as the next Vice Chief of the Air Staff, marking a significant leadership transition within the Indian Air Force. He is scheduled to assume office on July 1 and will become one of the key figures guiding the force through its ongoing modernization and capability enhancement programmes.

Currently serving as the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff (CISC), Air Marshal Dixit has been closely associated with efforts aimed at strengthening coordination among India’s armed forces. His tenure at the Integrated Defence Staff headquarters has coincided with important initiatives focused on enhancing joint operational planning and advancing the country’s theatre command framework.

With nearly four decades of distinguished service, Air Marshal Dixit is widely recognized as one of the Air Force’s most experienced fighter and test pilots. Since his commissioning into the fighter stream in December 1986, he has built an extensive operational and leadership record across multiple domains of military aviation.

An alumnus of the prestigious National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla, the Defence Services Staff College in Bangladesh, and the National Defence College in New Delhi, he has consistently held important appointments throughout his career. His academic and professional training has prepared him for leadership roles involving both operational command and strategic planning.

The Air Marshal is a qualified flying instructor and experimental test pilot with more than 3,300 flying hours. Over the course of his career, he has operated a diverse range of aircraft, including frontline fighter platforms such as the Mirage-2000, MiG-21, and Jaguar. His experience in testing and evaluating aircraft systems has made him a respected figure within India’s military aviation community.

One of the notable phases of his service involved commanding a premier fighter training establishment in southern India. Under his leadership, the base earned recognition as the best-performing unit in its command, reflecting his emphasis on operational excellence and training standards.

As Commanding Officer of the Flight Test Squadron at the Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) in Bengaluru, Air Marshal Dixit contributed to several indigenous aviation programmes. His work included supporting modernization initiatives and technological upgrades for aircraft fleets, particularly projects involving Jaguar and MiG-27 platforms. These efforts played an important role in extending operational capabilities and improving mission effectiveness.

During his tenure as Director of Air Staff Requirements, he was actively involved in planning and evaluating the Medium Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) trials, one of the most significant fighter acquisition programmes undertaken by the Indian Air Force. His experience in capability assessment and force planning has been regarded as valuable in shaping future procurement strategies.

Defence officials also credit him with promoting indigenous defence manufacturing and supporting homegrown aerospace projects. His contributions have aligned with India’s broader objective of increasing self-reliance in defence production and reducing dependence on foreign platforms.

The appointment comes at a time when the Air Force is pursuing major modernization programmes, including the induction of advanced aircraft, enhanced air defence systems, network-centric warfare capabilities, and indigenous fighter development projects. Air Marshal Dixit’s operational expertise and technical background are expected to contribute significantly to these efforts.

Military analysts view his elevation as a continuation of the Air Force’s focus on experienced operational leaders who possess both strategic vision and technical knowledge. His extensive background in testing, force development, and inter-service coordination positions him well to address evolving security challenges and emerging technological requirements.
