AIUDF Chief Badruddin Ajmal Urges Assam Govt to Name University or Medical College After Zubeen Garg
Assam, Nov 18 : All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal has condoled the death of iconic Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, calling his passing a “huge loss for the state.” Speaking to the media on Monday, Ajmal said he was personally “deeply saddened” by the singer’s demise, adding that the grief is shared across the world.
Ajmal urged the Assam government to honour Zubeen Garg’s legacy by naming a university or medical college after him, and proposed the creation of a foundation to help the poor, irrespective of caste or religion.
“Our heartfelt condolences go out to Zubeen Garg’s family… I demanded that the state name a university or medical college after him. A foundation should also be established to help the poor,” Ajmal said.
CIC Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta Resigns Amid SIT Probe Into Zubeen Garg Case
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Information Commissioner and former DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta resigned from his position on “moral grounds.” His decision followed an RTI application seeking details linked to his brother Shyamkanu Mahanta, who was arrested by the SIT/CID in the Zubeen Garg death case. Mahanta confirmed that he submitted his resignation to the Governor via Raj Bhawan.
Appointed as CIC in 2023, Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta’s resignation adds a fresh layer of development to the ongoing investigation.
Seven Arrested in Zubeen Garg Case
The SIT/CID has so far arrested seven individuals, including:
Shyamkanu Mahanta – Organiser of the North East India Festival in Singapore
Siddharth Sharma – Zubeen’s manager
Shekhar Jyoti Goswami – Bandmate
Amritprava Mahanta – Co-singer
Sandipan Garg – Cousin
PSOs Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishy
All have been sent to judicial custody.
Zubeen Garg, who died on September 19, had travelled to Singapore as the Cultural Brand Ambassador for the North East India Festival. Following his death, the state government formed an SIT to probe the case.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently stated that the SIT will submit the chargesheet by December 8.
