Almora Tragedy: Bus Plunges into Gorge in Uttarakhand, Six Dead and Several Injured
Tragedy strikes as passenger bus loses control on Bhikiyasain–Ramnagar route; rescue operations underway
Almora, Dec 30: At least six people were killed and several others injured after a passenger bus plunged into a deep gorge in Uttarakhand’s Almora district on Tuesday morning.
The accident took place in the Vinayak area when the bus, en route from Bhikiyasain to Ramnagar, reportedly lost control and veered off the road. The vehicle was carrying around 17–18 passengers at the time.
State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams, along with local police, rushed to the site following reports received by the District Control Room (DCR), Almora. Rescue operations are ongoing to extricate survivors from the wreckage and shift the injured to nearby medical facilities. Preliminary reports indicate six to seven passengers died on the spot, while the injured have been admitted to the Government Hospital in Bhikiyasain for treatment.
Almora Senior Superintendent of Police Devendra Pincha confirmed, “Rescue teams have been dispatched. There are reports of fatalities, and the injured have been admitted to the Bhikiyasain hospital.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the tragedy, stating, “The loss of lives due to a bus mishap in Almora district of Uttarakhand is extremely saddening. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest.”
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami also conveyed sorrow, calling the news “extremely distressing and heart-wrenching.” He offered prayers for the deceased and strength to the bereaved families. The Chief Minister has directed the district administration to ensure prompt medical treatment for the injured, with critically injured patients being referred to higher medical centres. Dhami is personally monitoring the situation and remains in constant touch with administrative officials.
