Amit Shah Reviews Assam Flood Situation, Assures Full Central Support During Call with CM

New Delhi, June 29: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday reviewed the evolving flood situation in Assam by speaking with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and assuring the state of every possible assistance from the Centre to tackle the crisis.

During the telephonic conversation, Shah sought a detailed assessment of the damage caused by rising water levels in different parts of the state. He enquired about the relief operations underway and reiterated the Central Government’s commitment to extending all necessary support for rescue, rehabilitation and restoration efforts.

The assurance came as floodwaters continued to affect several areas in Assam, with authorities intensifying emergency measures to safeguard residents living in vulnerable regions.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), nearly 16,000 people have been impacted by flooding across 69 villages under four revenue circles in Dhemaji district. Local administration teams, disaster response personnel and volunteers have been deployed to monitor water levels and assist affected families.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state government has been closely monitoring the situation since flooding began in Dhemaji. He expressed concern over the hardships faced by residents and affirmed that relief and rehabilitation remain the government’s highest priority.

The Chief Minister stated that all available resources are being mobilised to ensure the safety of affected families, while officials have been instructed to provide immediate assistance, establish relief camps where required and restore essential services as quickly as possible.

Authorities are also maintaining close surveillance over river levels, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas, as continued rainfall has increased the possibility of further inundation.

The flood situation has also affected transportation infrastructure. The North Frontier Railway (NFR) suspended train operations between Archipathar and Simen Chapari in Dhemaji district after heavy rainfall caused severe bank erosion near a railway bridge.

Railway officials explained that although the bridge itself remained structurally sound, a significant portion of the riverbank supporting one of its piers was washed away, making train movement unsafe until restoration work is completed. Engineers have been deployed to assess the extent of the damage and undertake emergency repairs.

The disruption has affected rail connectivity in the region, prompting railway authorities to closely monitor weather conditions and review operational safety before resuming services.

Disaster management teams continue to coordinate with district administrations to distribute relief materials, provide temporary shelter and monitor vulnerable embankments. Officials have urged residents living in flood-prone areas to remain alert and follow advisories issued by local authorities.

With more rainfall forecast over the coming days, both the state and Central governments are maintaining a high level of preparedness to minimise the impact of the floods and ensure timely assistance reaches affected communities.
