Amit Shah to Visit Tripura Border Areas, Launch Major Hotel Development Project

Union Home Minister combines strategic security assessment along the Bangladesh frontier with a major tourism infrastructure initiative in Tripura.

New Delhi, June 05 : Union Home Minister Amit Shah began an important day of engagements in Tripura on Friday, focusing on both national security and regional development during his two day visit to the northeastern state. The visit is being closely watched due to Tripura’s extensive international border with Bangladesh and the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen border management in sensitive areas.

After arriving in Agartala on Thursday evening, Shah started the day by offering prayers at the revered Maa Tripura Sundari Temple in Gomati district, one of the country’s prominent Shakti Peeths. The visit highlighted the cultural and religious significance of the state before the home minister moved on to official engagements.

A major component of Shah’s itinerary involved a comprehensive review of security arrangements along the India-Bangladesh border. He was scheduled to chair a high-level meeting at the Border Security Force’s Tripura Frontier headquarters in Shalbagan, where senior civil and security officials were expected to brief him on the prevailing situation along the international boundary.

The review meeting included participation from Chief Minister Manik Saha, Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar and senior officers from various security agencies. Discussions were expected to focus on strengthening surveillance mechanisms, improving coordination among agencies and addressing emerging security challenges in border regions.

Officials indicated that issues such as illegal infiltration, human trafficking networks, cross-border smuggling and narcotics movement remain key concerns for authorities. The Centre has consistently emphasized the need for robust border management to prevent unlawful activities and ensure national security.

As part of his assessment, Shah was also scheduled to visit the Lankamura Border Outpost, where he would receive a firsthand briefing on operational preparedness and the ground situation along the international frontier. The visit is expected to provide valuable insights into infrastructure requirements, deployment patterns and challenges faced by personnel guarding the border.

Apart from security-related engagements, the home minister also participated in a significant development initiative aimed at boosting tourism and hospitality in Tripura. He laid the foundation stone for the proposed Pushpabanta Palace Hotel project at the historic Old Raj Bhavan premises in Agartala.

The project represents an ambitious effort to transform the iconic Pushpabanta Palace into a luxury heritage destination. The state government had earlier entered into an agreement with Indian Hotels Company Limited, part of the Tata Group, to restore and develop the historic property as a five-star heritage hotel.

Authorities believe the project will contribute significantly to Tripura’s tourism sector by preserving an important architectural landmark while creating new economic opportunities. The development is expected to attract domestic and international visitors interested in heritage tourism and cultural experiences.

Officials have highlighted that the hotel project aligns with broader efforts to promote investment, strengthen tourism infrastructure and generate employment opportunities in the state. By combining heritage conservation with modern hospitality standards, the initiative aims to position Tripura as an emerging destination in India’s tourism landscape.

The visit reflects the Centre’s dual focus on strengthening national security and supporting economic development in border states. While enhanced security measures remain a priority due to Tripura’s strategic location, infrastructure and tourism projects are being promoted to accelerate regional growth and improve livelihoods.

Political observers view the visit as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to addressing both security and development challenges in the Northeast. The outcomes of the security review and the launch of the hospitality project are expected to have long-term implications for Tripura’s growth trajectory.

As the state continues to play an important role in India’s Act East policy and regional connectivity initiatives, the home minister’s engagements underscore the significance of Tripura in the country’s strategic and economic planning.
