Anupam Kher’s ‘Jaane Pehchaane Anjaane’ Opens Texas Run with Sold Out Houston Show

HOUSTON, Sept 7: Actor Anupam Kher’s latest Hindi play, “Jaane Pehchaane Anjaane,” made a strong North American debut with a sold out opening at Houston’s Stafford Centre on September 5, earning a standing ovation and setting the tone for its multi-city Texas tour.

Written and directed by Gajendra Ahire, the musical comedy-drama explores loneliness, companionship and emotional distance in contemporary relationships. The production features an ensemble cast led by Kher and Swaroop Sampat, along with Meghna Malik, Maya Sharma, Vikas Rawat, Shraddha Mandale and Herman D’Souza.

The Houston performance also marked Sampat’s return to the stage after nearly two decades. Her reunion with theatre and collaboration with Kher added to the significance of the production’s opening night.

Calling the Houston launch an “outstanding” beginning, Kher said theatre provides performers with an immediate and unfiltered response from the audience.

“There is no retake and nowhere to hide on stage. You know immediately whether the story has reached people,” Kher said after the performance.

He said the audience’s reaction throughout the evening was particularly gratifying, noting that viewers laughed, fell silent during emotional moments and responded with sustained applause.

For Sampat, returning to theatre with Kher was an experience that felt like “coming home”. She said the play’s exploration of human emotions and loneliness resonated with audiences across age groups.

“The story is very human. It is about people, their loneliness, and the things they don’t always say to each other,” she said.

Sampat added that the audience’s response in Houston was especially rewarding, with moments of complete silence giving way to loud applause.

National promoter Rajender Singh described the opening-night response as overwhelming and said the full house and standing ovation had boosted confidence in the production’s wider North American journey.

Singh said the enthusiastic Houston reception had provided strong momentum as the play travels to audiences across the United States and Canada.

India’s Consul General in Houston, D.C. Manjunath, along with several local community leaders, attended the opening performance.

Houston holds particular significance for Kher, having previously served as the starting point for his 2015 North American tour of “Mera Woh Matlab Nahi Tha.”

Anu Malik Makes Stage Debut

The production also features veteran music composer Anu Malik in his stage debut. The play’s lyrics have been penned by Kausar Munir, while vocals are provided by Shaan, Sukhwinder Singh and Anandi Joshi.

After its Houston opening, the tour continued with performances in Austin and Dallas, followed by shows in Vancouver on September 11, Los Angeles on September 13, San Francisco on September 18, Atlanta on September 25 and Toronto on September 26.

The production will subsequently travel through several cities across the US East Coast and Midwest during October.

Meanwhile, Kher has several major film projects lined up, including “Khosla Ka Ghosla 2,” Nitesh Tiwari’s “Ramayana,” and the Telugu feature “Fauzi.”
