Anurag Thakur Says ‘AAP-Mukt Punjab’ Essential for Building a ‘Nasha-Mukt’ State
BJP leader says ending the drug menace requires a change in government and urges voters to support the BJP.
CHANDIGARH, Sep 23: BJP MP Anurag Thakur on Wednesday criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab over the state’s drug problem and said the BJP was capable of addressing the crisis.
Addressing a gathering during the BJP’s ‘Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra’ in Rupnagar, Thakur alleged that drugs were being sold openly in parts of the state and claimed that illegal substances were even being delivered to people’s homes.
He questioned the Punjab government over its repeated deadlines to curb drug abuse, asking why the problem continued despite those commitments.
Thakur alleged that people who spoke out against drug sales in their localities were being threatened. He also criticised the government over its policies, arguing that financial benefits and free electricity would have little meaning if the future of young people was damaged by addiction.
Calling for public support, the BJP leader said Punjab had already given opportunities to several political parties and urged voters to give the BJP a chance to form the government.
The BJP has launched four anti-drug yatras from different parts of Punjab. According to the party, the 13-day campaigns will cover nearly 4,000 km and pass through all 117 Assembly constituencies.
The four yatras are scheduled to culminate in Jalandhar, where Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to address a rally on September 30.
Thakur said the Centre, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Shah, was committed to protecting young people from addiction. He alleged that criminal networks and administrative shortcomings had contributed to the continuing drug problem in Punjab.
He also appealed to people to support efforts aimed at creating a drug-free Punjab and said the issue should remain a priority for the state.
