Apple-Laden Parcel Vans Begin Service From Today on Delhi, Jammu Routes

New initiative aims to ensure timely, safe transport of Kashmiri apples, reducing dependence on highway

Srinagar, Sept 11: In a move set to strengthen horticultural logistics in Kashmir, two parcel van coaches loaded with apples will depart from Budgam railway station today one attached to a Delhi bound train and the other to a Jammu bound service, officials said on Thursday.

The initiative, introduced by Indian Railways, is aimed at providing faster, safer, and more reliable transportation of Kashmiri apples to national markets, thereby reducing reliance on the Srinagar–Jammu Highway, which often faces disruptions due to weather and landslides.

A senior railway official said the step will directly benefit growers by saving both time and cost. “Special arrangements have been made this season to facilitate smooth apple transportation. With dedicated parcel vans, orchardists will have an assured, efficient corridor to supply their produce across the country,” he added.

Local orchardists have hailed the move as a major relief. Abdul Majid, a grower from Shopian, said, “We often incur heavy losses when trucks get stranded on the highway for days. A train service gives us hope that our fruit will now reach markets on time and fetch better prices.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Ghulam Nabi from Pulwama called it a “historic moment”. “Apple is the backbone of Kashmir’s economy, and such steps will not only help farmers but also boost the Valley’s overall economy. A dedicated daily train for apples is the need of the hour,” he said.

Officials said if the pilot proves successful, more such parcel vans could be introduced to cater to the Valley’s massive apple production.
