Asia Cup: Jatinder Singh Appeals for India’s Support to Boost Oman Cricket
Oman captain calls for increased exposure, training opportunities, and franchise participation to bridge the gap between Associate and Test-playing nations.
India : Oman captain Jatinder Singh has urged India and other major cricketing nations to extend stronger support to Associate teams following Oman’s spirited performance in their Asia Cup debut.
Facing India for the first time in any format, Oman narrowly lost by 21 runs in Abu Dhabi but impressed with their resilience and competitive spirit. Singh emphasized that training stints in India, including access to National Cricket Academies (NCAs), practice matches with Ranji and club teams, and exposure to high-quality T20s, could significantly help Associate nations bridge the gap with elite cricketing sides.
“We are an Associate nation and rarely get opportunities to play against Test-playing nations,” Singh said. “Platforms like the Asia Cup allow us to learn, gain experience, and develop our players’ skills, fitness, and mental strength. More such exposure is vital for the growth of Associate cricket.”
Singh also highlighted the lack of opportunities for Omani players in franchise leagues, which restricts their growth and international experience. “Oman players are no less than anyone else. Playing in such tournaments or leagues would provide invaluable experience that can be shared back home,” he added.
Reflecting on his team’s performance, Singh praised his players’ character, teamwork, and determination, acknowledging minor gaps in partnerships but lauding their overall effort in bowling, fielding, and batting.
Looking ahead, Singh expressed optimism about Oman hosting the upcoming T20 World Cup qualifiers. “The boys are ready to roar and build on the lessons from the Asia Cup,” he said, emphasizing the team’s commitment to continued growth and competitiveness.
