Asom Divas 2025: Celebrating Sukaphaa’s Historic Arrival in Assam
Assam celebrates the arrival of its first Ahom king, Sukaphaa, whose legacy of unity and cultural integration shapes the state even today.
Assam , Dec 02 : Assam woke up to vibrant celebrations on Asom Divas 2025, the annual occasion commemorating Chaolung Sukaphaa, the first Ahom king and founder of the Ahom kingdom. Across the state, people honoured his legacy, shared stories of heritage, and reflected on the history that shaped present day Assam.
History and Significance of Asom Divas
Observed every year on December 2, Asom Divas marks Sukaphaa’s arrival in Assam in 1228, following a challenging 13-year journey across the Patkai Hills. Born a prince of the Su/Tsu (Tiger) clan in Mong Mao, now part of China’s Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture, Sukaphaa left his homeland after his path to the throne was blocked by the birth of a cousin.
On reaching Namrup in present-day Assam, Sukaphaa established the Ahom Kingdom, which endured for nearly 600 years. Unlike many rulers of his era, he united communities through friendship and understanding rather than conquest. His diplomacy and respect for diverse tribal traditions earned him the title Chaolung Sukaphaa “Lord Great.” In 1996, the Assam government officially declared December 2 as Asom Divas to honour his monumental contributions.
Celebrating Assam’s Culture and Unity
Asom Divas is a vibrant celebration of Assam’s culture, featuring traditional music, tribal dances, and folk performances. From the graceful Bagurumba to energetic Bihu and Bhortal dances, the day highlights the state’s artistic and cultural heritage. Sukaphaa’s legacy of peace and harmony among diverse communities remains the core message of the celebrations, reinforcing unity and coexistence as pillars of Assam’s identity.
Amit Shah’s Message
Union Home Minister Amit Shah extended his greetings on social media, stating: “Warm wishes to our sisters and brothers of Assam on #AsomDivas. This occasion commemorates the glory of the Ahom era and fortifies our commitment to protecting the rich culture of Assam, in which every Indian takes great pride.” He added that the Modi-led NDA government has strengthened peace in the region over the past nine years, with hopes for continued progress.
Conclusion
Asom Divas 2025 not only honours the historic arrival of Sukaphaa but also serves as a reminder of Assam’s unity, resilience, and rich cultural heritage values that continue to inspire generations today.
