Union Cabinet approves extension of Atal Pension Yojana till 2030-31 with continued government support for promotion and development

New Delhi, Jan 21: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the continuation of the government’s flagship Atal Pension Yojana (APY) up to the financial year 2030-31. The decision also includes extension of funding support for promotional, developmental activities and gap funding to expand the scheme’s outreach.

Launched on May 9, 2015, APY aims to provide old-age income security to workers in the unorganised sector. As of January 19, 2026, over 8.66 crore subscribers have enrolled in the scheme.

Under the continued APY framework, the government will support initiatives such as awareness campaigns and capacity-building programs to encourage participation among unorganised workers. The scheme guarantees a minimum pension ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000 per month starting at age 60, depending on individual contributions, officials said.

The Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, underscored the government’s commitment to financial security for unorganised sector workers and strengthening the pension ecosystem in the country.
