Audio Traffic Signals Needed at Crossings, Delhi Speaker Tells L-G
Delhi Speaker Urges Audio Traffic Signals for Safer Crossings
New Delhi — Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta has appealed to Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu to install audio traffic signals across the city to ensure safer road crossings for vulnerable pedestrians, including senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
Addressing Challenges Faced by Vulnerable Pedestrians
In a letter dated March 16, Gupta highlighted the daily difficulties faced by pedestrians with limited vision. He emphasized that visibility issues affect a significant portion of the city’s population, making road safety a pressing concern.
Supporting Data on Vision Impairment
Citing data from the Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences at AIIMS, Gupta noted that nearly 60 lakh people in Delhi suffer from various vision impairments. Among them, an estimated 12 to 18 lakh individuals live with significant low vision, many of whom are senior citizens.
Call for Action
Gupta urged the LG to implement audio traffic signals as a step toward creating a more inclusive and secure environment for all pedestrians, stressing that such measures could prevent accidents and enhance the mobility of citizens with visual impairments.
