Auqaf Market in Lal Chowk Faces Scrutiny as Waqf Board Chairperson Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi Cracks Down
12-09-2023 : Dr. Darakhshan Andrabi, the Chairperson of the Jammu & Kashmir Waqf Board, embarked on an inspection of the bustling Auqaf Market situated in Budshah Chowk, Srinagar. This market, centrally located in the posh area of Lal Chowk, is home to several Waqf-owned shops. During her visit, Dr. Andrabi meticulously reviewed the allotment records, occupancy records, and rental details of all the commercial units operating within the rented accommodations owned by the Waqf Board. Accompanied by Waqf Board Tehsildar Ishtiyaq Mohiuddin and other board officers who carried the records of all allottees, Dr. Andrabi left no stone unturned in her assessment.
Addressing the tenants of these properties, the Waqf Chairperson emphasized the urgency of clearing any pending rent within the next two weeks to avoid potential actions taken by the Board. She highlighted the multiple notices that had been issued to the tenants regarding their overdue rent payments, expressing disappointment that these arrears had not been settled. Dr. Andrabi made it unequivocally clear that the days of exploiting Waqf properties were over and that everyone, regardless of their status, must settle their dues promptly or face consequences from the Board.
Furthermore, Dr. Andrabi urged occupants who lacked valid documents for their allotments from the Waqf to promptly approach the Waqf Board. She stressed the need to adhere to the rules and provisions set by the Central Waqf, cautioning that properties without legitimate documentation would be subject to sealing.
In no uncertain terms, Dr. Andrabi stated, “No illegal occupant will be allowed to continue their occupation. We have previously issued warnings to such individuals, but now, their time has run out. They must immediately report to the Waqf Board to rectify their records or brace themselves for serious consequences. Waqf properties belong to the people, and we cannot allow anyone to believe that they have the right to misuse this public asset.”
Responding to a query, Dr. Andrabi expressed her dismay at the interference of politicians whenever the Board seeks to implement reforms or streamline its operations. She found it astonishing that some shopkeepers expected to rent prime spaces in Lal Chowk for a mere thousand rupees per month.
