Australia and Vanuatu Sign Landmark Security Treaty

New agreement bars foreign military bases in Vanuatu and strengthens strategic cooperation in the Pacific.

Australia, June 30 : Australia and Vanuatu have signed the Nakamal Treaty, a landmark security agreement designed to deepen defence cooperation while preventing the establishment of foreign military bases in Vanuatu. The treaty includes provisions for disaster response, policing cooperation, maritime security, and infrastructure development. Australian officials described the agreement as a major step toward maintaining peace and stability across the Pacific region. The deal comes amid increasing geopolitical competition in the Indo-Pacific, where major powers are expanding their diplomatic and security presence. Analysts say the agreement reinforces Australia’s strategic partnerships with Pacific Island nations while addressing growing regional security concerns.
