‘Babri Masjid’ Comment by Suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir Fuels Tension in Beldanga

West Bengal on alert as Humayun Kabir’s December 6 programme stirs political, religious tensions; administration deploys forces to prevent escalation.

New Delhi, Dec 06 : Suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir is expected to lay the foundation stone of what he calls the “Babri Masjid” in Beldanga on December 6, 2025, triggering a politically sensitive showdown in West Bengal. Security forces gathered at the Beldanga Police Station early Saturday as the administration braced for rising tensions and intensified political reactions.

The TMC legislator from Bharatpur was suspended on December 4 for “communal politics,” shortly after he announced plans to resign from the Assembly by December 8 and launch a new political party on December 22. Kabir insists his programme will go ahead despite disciplinary action, setting off what is now widely being described as the Humayun Kabir Babri Masjid row.

Ground Reactions: Supporters Arrive With Bricks

On the ground, dramatic visuals emerged of Md Safiqul Islam, a resident of Uttar Barasat, walking with bricks on his head. “I will go where Humayun Kabir lays the foundation stone… I am carrying bricks for Babri Masjid,” he told ANI.

Kabir has framed his event as a symbolic act, but critics say reviving the “Babri Masjid” narrative — especially on the date of its demolition — is an attempt to provoke sentiments.

TMC Hits Out: ‘Reigniting Bitter Memories’

Trinamool Congress leaders, including Minister Firhad Hakim, accused Kabir of attempting to “reignite bitter memories” from a painful chapter in India’s history. Party leaders hinted at possible BJP influence, questioning the timing and political motive behind his recent statements.

Kabir maintains he learnt of his suspension only through the media and has not received any official party communication.

Mamata Banerjee’s Warning: ‘Politics of Riots Will Not Be Tolerated’

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, speaking at a rally in Berhampore on December 4, condemned all forms of communal politics.

“Trinamool Congress does not practise communal politics and is firmly against it. Murshidabad will not accept the politics of riots,” she said, invoking the region’s syncretic heritage and warning against attempts to polarise communities ahead of the 2026 Assembly polls.

Banerjee again rejected NRC and detention centres and reiterated her government’s commitment to safeguarding minority rights and Waqf properties.

Religious Leaders Urge Caution

Prominent Islamic cleric Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi of the Barelvi sect criticised Kabir for “trying to fan a communal divide.” He warned the suspended MLA not to turn Murshidabad into “another Ayodhya.”

“Build a mosque if you want, but don’t name it after Babri,” the cleric said, cautioning that provocative symbolism could deepen divides and give “opportunists” room to exploit tensions.
