Bandipora-Gurez Road Blocked After Heavy Snowfall; Tulail Lower Areas See Up to 15 Inches Accumulation
Tulail lower areas receive 14-15 inches of snow as authorities suspend traffic on high-altitude route
Bandipora, Dec 31: Fresh heavy snowfall in north Kashmir’s Gurez sector has forced the closure of the 85-kilometre Bandipora-Gurez road, following over a foot of snow accumulation at Razdhan Pass, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
Snowfall in the lower Tulail region ranged between 14 and 15 inches, while Dawar town received around 3-4 inches. Continuous snowfall in the valley has reduced visibility and worsened road conditions, making vehicular travel unsafe.
Sub Divisional Magistrate Gurez, Mukhtar Ahmad, confirmed that traffic on the Bandipora-Gurez road has been suspended as a precautionary measure. Authorities said the road will reopen only after the weather improves and snow clearance operations are completed. Commuters are advised to avoid travel and follow official advisories.
The Bandipora-Gurez route, the only vital connection between the remote Gurez Valley and district headquarters, typically remains cut off for three to four months each winter due to heavy snowfall at Razdhan Pass.
