Bangladesh Arrests 10 in Killing of Hindu Youth Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh

RAB, police arrest suspects as killing of Hindu youth triggers outrage among minority groups

Dhaka/Mymensingh: At least ten people have been arrested in connection with the brutal killing of Dipu Chandra Das, a 27-year-old Hindu youth, in Mymensingh district of Bangladesh, law enforcement officials said.

The arrests were carried out through coordinated operations by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and the local police. While RAB apprehended seven suspects from different locations, the police arrested three others as part of the ongoing investigation.

Confirming the development, Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, said in a post on X that ten individuals had been taken into custody in connection with the “beating murder” of Dipu Chandra Das in Bhaluka, Mymensingh.

Those arrested by RAB have been identified as Md. Limon Sarkar (19), Md. Tarek Hossain (19), Md. Manik Mia (20), Ershad Ali (39), Nijum Uddin (20), Alomgir Hossain (38) and Md. Miraj Hossain Akon (46). The police arrested Md. Azmol Hasan Sagir (26), Md. Shahin Mia (19) and Md. Nazmul, officials said.

According to reports, Dipu Chandra Das was allegedly attacked by a mob over accusations of blasphemy. His body was reportedly set on fire during the assault, and he later succumbed to his injuries. The incident sparked widespread outrage across Bangladesh, particularly among minority rights organisations.

The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council strongly condemned the killing, calling it a grave act of violence against the country’s minority community and demanding strict punishment for those responsible.

The incident occurred amid heightened political tension in Bangladesh following the recent death of student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, convener of Inqilab Moncho and a parliamentary candidate for the February 2026 national elections. Hadi died in Singapore on December 18 while undergoing treatment for gunshot wounds sustained in an attack in Dhaka earlier this month. His funeral prayers concluded in Bangladesh on Saturday.

Authorities said investigations into the murder of Dipu Chandra Das are ongoing, and further arrests cannot be ruled out.
