Bangladesh Cricket Board Calls on Govt to Scrap Probe Committee Amid ICC Concerns

BCB Seeks Clarity from Sports Ministry to Protect Board’s Independence and International Standing

Dhaka – The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has expressed serious concerns over government interference after the sports ministry formed a five member investigation committee to review last year’s board elections. The panel, tasked with probing alleged “irregularities, manipulation and abuse of power,” was given 15 working days from March 11 to complete its review of the election that elected Aminul Islam as BCB president.

In a statement, the board warned that the committee’s actions could raise governance concerns in the international cricket community. “Developments interpreted as interference in the affairs of a democratically elected cricket board may draw scrutiny from the ICC leadership,” the BCB said, noting that the matter has been informally discussed with senior ICC representatives.

Before taking any formal action with the International Cricket Council (ICC), the BCB plans to seek clarification from the National Sports Council regarding the intent and implications of the government’s decision. The board emphasized that safeguarding the stability, independence, and progress of Bangladesh cricket is paramount while ensuring the country’s reputation in global cricket remains intact.

The elections have been mired in controversy since last year. Former captain Tamim Iqbal withdrew midway, citing concerns over alleged government influence. Tensions escalated when the sports ministry withdrew a nominated BCB director due to prior political affiliations. Additionally, several Dhaka-based cricket clubs, representing Category-2 voters, declared the current board illegal and boycotted the 2025–26 Dhaka league season, deepening the governance crisis.
