BASOHLI PAINTING: A PROUD HERITAGE OF J&K

Editorial

The news of the Geographical Indication (GI) tagging of Basohli painting from the Kathua district has brought much joy to the artistic community of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a proud moment for the region and the country as a whole, as the painting is the first independent GI-tagged product from the Jammu region. GI tagging is a form of Intellectual Property right that identifies goods originating from a specific geographical location and having distinct nature, quality and characteristics linked to that location. It is a mechanism to protect the cultural heritage and traditional knowledge of a particular region, while also promoting the economic prosperity of producers and related stakeholders.

Indian culture has a rich history that has been handed down from one generation to the next. The Basohli painting is one example of this legacy; it has recently been given the Geographical Indication (GI) Tag after being approved by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) Jammu. Basohli painting is a distinctive genre of art that originated in the rural village of Basohli in the Indian UT of Jammu and Kashmir. The GI tagging of Basohli’s painting is a significant step towards the recognition and preservation of this art form. Basohli painting is an ancient art form that dates back to the 17th century. It is a unique style of miniature painting that originated in the town of Basohli in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. This art form is known for its bright colours, bold lines, and strong facial features. Basohli paintings are typically based on Hindu mythology and are known for their intricate details and rich textures. The history of Basohli’s painting can be traced back to the reign of Raja Kirpal Pal. During his reign, Basohli emerged as a centre for art and culture. The town became famous for its paintings, which were sought after by art collectors from all over India. Basohli paintings were also exported to various parts of the world, including Europe and Central Asia.It is a unique form of miniature painting that requires a great deal of skill and patience. The paintings are typically done on paper or silk, using natural colours derived from minerals, vegetables, and other natural sources. The artists use a fine brush to create intricate details and patterns. The painting process is slow and laborious, as each layer of colour needs to be applied separately and allowed to dry before the next layer is added. The GI tag will provide legal protection for Basohli painting and help in promoting its commercial value. It will also help in preserving the art form by preventing its imitation and ensuring that only authentic Basohli paintings are sold in the market. The GI tag will also promote the economic prosperity of the producers and stakeholders associated with the art form. By boosting exports and promoting the Basohli painting brand at an international level, the GI tag will also contribute to the GDP of the country. However, it is not enough to merely secure the GI tag. The local government must take further steps to promote the development of Basohli paintings and support the livelihoods of the artists involved in their creation.

The J&K government can collaborate with tourism agencies and create packages that include visits to Basohli painting workshops and exhibitions. Tourists would not only get to see the artists in action but also have the opportunity to purchase the paintings directly, thereby supporting the local industry. The government can also set up stalls at popular tourist spots to sell Basohli paintings and other handicrafts from the region. Finally, the government must also ensure that the artists are paid fairly for their work. The government can create guidelines for the pricing of Basohli paintings and ensure that the artists are paid accordingly. The government can also provide legal assistance to artists to protect their intellectual property rights and prevent copyright infringement. GI tagging of Basohli paintings is a significant achievement for the handicrafts industry of Jammu and Kashmir. However, it is not enough to merely secure the GI tag. The government must take further steps to promote the development of Basohli paintings and support the livelihoods of the artists involved in their creation.  By promoting tourism, e-commerce, providing training and financial assistance, and ensuring fair payment for the artists, the government can ensure the continued success of Basohli paintings and the preservation of this unique art form for future generations.
