Bengaluru Court Orders FIR Against Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Electoral Bond Extortion Case

Nirmala Sitharaman and BJP Leaders Face Extortion Allegations as Bengaluru Court Calls for Investigation

Bengaluru, Sep 28:  In a significant development, a Special Court in Bengaluru has instructed local police to file a First Information Report (FIR) against Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and several others, following serious allegations of extortion linked to electoral bonds.

The accusations originate from a complaint submitted by Adarsh Iyer, Co-President of the Janadhikar Sangharsa Parishad (JSP), which alleges that a substantial amount of money was improperly collected through electoral bonds between 2019 and 2022. The complaint notably implicates prominent figures within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including National President JP Nadda, former Karnataka BJP President Nalin Kumar Kateel, and Vijayendra Yediyurappa, who previously served as the Chief Minister of Karnataka.

According to the details outlined in the complaint filed in April 2024, it is alleged that the total funds amassed through these electoral bonds amounted to significant figures, including ₹230 crore from a single businessman’s company and an additional₹49 crore from a pharmaceutical firm.

In response to the complaint, the court has mandated that police initiate immediate investigations into the allegations, which could have far-reaching implications for the individuals named and the BJP’s political standing in Karnataka.

The directive from the Special Court has added a layer of complexity to the ongoing discourse surrounding electoral financing in India, as scrutiny intensifies over the transparency and legality of such funding mechanisms. The outcome of the investigation will be closely monitored, as it has the potential to influence public perception and political dynamics in the region.
