BJD Stages Rajya Sabha Walkout Over Nishikant Dubey’s Controversial Remarks
Party registers strong protest after BJP MP’s statement triggers uproar in Upper House
New Delhi, Mar 30 : In a dramatic development in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) staged a walkout to protest controversial remarks made by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey regarding former Odisha Chief Minister Biju Patnaik.
The protest erupted shortly after the House proceedings began, when BJD leader Sasmit Patra stood up to strongly object to what he described as “false, baseless, and objectionable statements.” He criticized the remarks targeting the legacy of Biju Patnaik, calling them unacceptable and damaging.
Patra expressed sharp disapproval, stating that such comments undermine the dignity of a respected leader and freedom fighter. He further alleged that the remarks reflected poorly on the standards of political discourse, prompting his party to take a firm stand.
Declaring the statements as “deeply offensive,” the BJD leader announced the party’s decision to boycott the proceedings as a mark of protest. Members of the party then exited the House, signaling their strong dissent.
The controversy follows Patra’s earlier resignation from a Parliamentary Standing Committee, a move also linked to the same issue. The remarks have sparked wider political reactions, drawing attention to the legacy of Biju Patnaik, who remains a towering figure in Odisha’s history for his contributions as a leader, aviator, and freedom fighter.
