BJP Accuses Congress of Disrupting Parliament, Hindering Debate on Key Bills
Sambit Patra alleges parliamentary deadlock has stalled debate on major legislation and accuses Opposition of selective politics over examination issues.
New Delhi, Aug 04 : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday accused the Congress and its INDIA bloc allies of repeatedly disrupting proceedings during the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament, alleging that their protests have obstructed discussions on important legislation and affected the smooth functioning of both Houses.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, BJP national spokesperson and Lok Sabha MP Sambit Patra said continuous interruptions have prevented Parliament from carrying out its legislative responsibilities despite the significant public expenditure involved in conducting each session.
According to Patra, Question Hour and Zero Hour have been repeatedly disrupted since the beginning of the session, limiting Members of Parliament from raising constituency related issues and participating in debates on key national matters. He alleged that the Opposition’s strategy has resulted in several Bills being passed without detailed discussion.
The BJP leader claimed that the Congress and its allies were responsible for creating the deadlock, describing their approach as politically motivated. He further alleged that the Opposition’s actions have deprived citizens of meaningful parliamentary debates on proposed legislative reforms.
Patra also targeted the Congress over its response to alleged examination irregularities in states governed by different political parties. He accused the party of adopting a selective approach by raising concerns over paper leak incidents in some states while remaining silent on similar allegations in states where it is in power.
Referring to reported remarks made by Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge regarding the alleged police constable recruitment examination controversy, Patra questioned the Congress leadership’s silence on the issue. He also alleged that the party had not actively supported students protesting over the reported irregularities in the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) examination.
Highlighting the impact of repeated disruptions, Patra said important pieces of legislation, including the Supreme Court Number of Judges (Amendment) Bill, 2026 and the Registration of Birth and Death (Amendment) Bill, 2026, were cleared without extensive deliberations because parliamentary proceedings could not function normally.
The BJP spokesperson further criticised a recent Opposition protest inside the Parliament complex concerning allegations related to donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya. He alleged that the manner in which the demonstration was staged hurt the sentiments of the Hindu community by portraying a person dressed as a sadhu in a derogatory manner.
The Congress and other Opposition parties have maintained that their protests are intended to hold the government accountable on issues they consider to be of public importance, while the ruling BJP has continued to insist that parliamentary proceedings should not be repeatedly disrupted.
