BJP Accuses Rahul of Creating ‘False Narrative’ After Man Held Over AI-Generated ACP Video
BJP questions Congress over circulation of fabricated footage after Delhi Police arrest 24-year-old accused in AI-video case.
NEW DELHI, Oct 6: The BJP on Tuesday accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other party leaders of spreading a “false narrative” against the Delhi Police after an AI-generated video allegedly depicting a police officer sexually assaulting a woman journalist was found to be fabricated.
The political exchange followed the arrest of a 24 year old man who allegedly circulated the manipulated video featuring Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Vivek Bhagat. According to Delhi Police, the footage falsely portrayed the officer sexually assaulting a woman described as an independent journalist.
Police identified the accused as Nadeem Ahmed Ameen, a resident of Palwal district in Haryana. He was apprehended from the Mewat region on Monday, and investigators recovered a mobile phone that was allegedly used to distribute the AI-generated reel.
The accused was reportedly operating an Instagram account with around 24,000 followers.
Reacting to the arrest, BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari said the development had exposed what he described as Gandhi’s “lies”. He also appeared to respond to a social media post by Gandhi earlier in the day in which the Congress leader had written, “Gyanesh it’s done bro. Time to resign.”
Bhandari alleged that several Congress linked individuals and groups had promoted the video and used it to support protests and build allegations against the police.
He claimed Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and members of the Congress ecosystem had sought to portray the Delhi Police negatively on the basis of content that was allegedly generated using artificial intelligence and was not genuine.
The BJP spokesperson further alleged that the incident reflected what he called a broader attempt by the Congress to influence public opinion through misleading claims. He accused the party of using such narratives to create distrust in democratic institutions and claimed that Gandhi was seeking to revive the Congress’s political prospects at the Centre through such campaigns.
Bhandari also questioned Gandhi’s decision to share the allegation on social media and asked why the post had not been removed after the video was identified as fake.
He sought an explanation from the Congress leader over whether the alleged video had been produced or promoted at the direction of the party’s IT cell.
“Did Rahul Gandhi and his ecosystem pay these content creators to make fake videos?” Bhandari asked, while demanding that the Congress clarify its role, if any, in the circulation of the manipulated footage.
The BJP leader also questioned why the Congress ecosystem had continued to amplify the material before its authenticity was established.
The controversy highlights the growing political concern surrounding AI-generated and manipulated content, particularly when such material is circulated during protests or used to make serious allegations against public officials.
