BJP MLAs Walk Out of J&K Assembly, Protest Omar Abdullah’s Alleged Remarks

Opposition demands unconditional apology from CM Omar Abdullah over alleged unparliamentary remarks

Srinagar, Feb 11: High drama unfolded in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Wednesday as BJP legislators walked out, accusing Chief Minister Omar Abdullah of using language they termed “unparliamentary” and unbecoming of the House.

Leader of the Opposition Sunil Sharma claimed the Chief Minister made remarks such as “joote maaro,” arguing that such expressions undermine democratic values and erode legislative decorum.

Raising slogans against the National Conference-led government, BJP members pressed for an unconditional apology and warned they would continue their protest if the statement was neither withdrawn nor clarified.

Addressing the media after the walkout, Sharma asserted that the Assembly’s functioning would remain disrupted until the Chief Minister expressed regret. He described the comments as disrespectful to the institution and inconsistent with constitutional norms.

The BJP leader also alleged that treasury bench members ridiculed Opposition lawmakers through gestures during the heated exchange, further escalating tensions inside the chamber.

The uproar followed a charged debate that quickly spiralled into confrontation, prompting BJP MLAs to exit the House in protest. Amid the disorder, the Speaker adjourned proceedings for the day.

The party reiterated that safeguarding the dignity of the Assembly was non-negotiable, signalling that the standoff could persist without a formal apology from the Chief Minister.
