BJP MP Raju Bista’s convoy attacked by miscreants in North Bengal
Attack follows Centre’s appointment of Gorkha interlocutor; BJP leaders condemn incident
Darjeeling, Oct 19 : The convoy of BJP MP Raju Bista was attacked by miscreants on Saturday evening in the Sukhia Pokhari area of North Bengal, raising tensions in the region.
Sharing details on social media, Bista said the assailants targeted the vehicle behind his own, sparing him from direct harm. He described the timing of the attack coming shortly after the Centre’s announcement of a government interlocutor for Gorkha issues in Darjeeling, Dooars, and Terai as “highly suspicious” and indicative of a conspiracy to disturb peace in the hills.
“If those loyal to Kolkata think we will be fazed, they are wrong. Such cowardly attacks only strengthen our resolve. We will work towards lasting peace, and no force on earth can stop that from happening,” Bista said.
The incident comes weeks after BJP MP Khagen Murmu and party MLA Shankar Ghosh were attacked by miscreants in Jalpaiguri district.
Union Minister of State for Education and DoNER, Sukanta Majumdar, strongly condemned the attack:
“Yet another despicable conspiracy unfolded targeting our MP from Darjeeling, Shri @RajuBistaBJP Ji. The vehicle behind his car was damaged, but by the grace of the Almighty, Raju ji is safe. The people of North Bengal will ensure a fitting response. Neither BJP representatives nor karyakartas can be intimidated,” Majumdar said on social media.
The attack coincides with political tensions following Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s objection to the Centre’s appointment of a government interlocutor for Gorkha issues. She described the move as “unilateral,” undermining state authority and potentially affecting the socio-political balance in the hills.
As North Bengal remains on edge, BJP leaders have vowed to continue their political work while ensuring safety for their representatives and party workers.
