BJP Wants Central Rule Extended if Power Slips Away, Says NC’s Omar Abdullah in Response to Engineer Rashid

SRINAGAR, Oct 7: National Conference Vice-President Omar Abdullah has voiced concerns over the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) intentions regarding the future governance of Jammu and Kashmir. On Monday, Abdullah claimed that the BJP would prefer to extend the central rule if they fail to secure enough support to form a government in the Union Territory. His remarks came in response to a statement by Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) Chief Abdul Rashid Sheikh, commonly known as Engineer Rashid.

During a press conference, Engineer Rashid urged that regardless of which party or coalition gains a majority, no government should be formed until the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir is restored. He revealed that he had recently visited Delhi for discussions and was advocating for the restoration of statehood before any new administration takes office.

Omar Abdullah, reacting sharply to Rashid’s statement, took to X (formerly known as Twitter), stating, “The man goes to Delhi for 24 hours and comes back to play straight into the hands of the BJP.” He accused Rashid of indirectly supporting the BJP’s agenda, which he believes is aimed at prolonging central rule in Jammu and Kashmir to maintain control over the region.

“The BJP would like nothing more than to extend central rule in J&K if they aren’t in a position to form a government,” Abdullah added. He reiterated that his party is committed to ensuring the restoration of democratic processes and statehood in Jammu and Kashmir, and he cautioned against any moves that might delay these objectives.
