12-11-2023 : In a distressing incident, approximately 40 laborers are apprehended to be trapped following the collapse of a section of an under-construction 4.5-kilometer-long tunnel connecting Silkyara and Dandalgaon on the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri National Highway in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. The incident occurred on Sunday, prompting immediate rescue efforts.
Officials are actively engaged in endeavors to safely extract the trapped individuals. Notably, an oxygen pipe has been deployed through water pipelines within the tunnel to ensure that those confined do not encounter respiratory difficulties.
Uttarkashi District Magistrate, Abhishek Ruhela, confirmed that relief and rescue operations are underway with full force to extricate the laborers ensnared within the tunnel at Silkiyara. The meticulous process involves the deployment of cutting-edge machinery to clear debris and facilitate the evacuation of the trapped workers.
Ruhela emphasized that the administration’s foremost priority is the successful evacuation of the laborers confined in the tunnel. Collaboration is evident as various relief and rescue agencies, technical organizations, and NHIDCL (National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited) are actively participating in the ongoing rescue operations.
The comprehensive list containing names and addresses of all 40 laborers, originating from diverse states, has been released by the administration. Concurrently, in a bid to streamline relief efforts, the District Magistrate has rescinded leaves for all district officers. They have been instructed to promptly return to their respective duties and remain on standby around the clock for the ongoing relief and rescue operations. The gravity of the situation is underscored by the urgent and coordinated efforts of multiple stakeholders to address the crisis and secure the well-being of the trapped laborers.
