Budget Allocates ₹10,000 Crore for Biopharma Sector Over Five Years
Finance Minister outlines support for pharmaceuticals, semiconductors, and critical mineral facilities
New Delhi, Feb 1: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday proposed a ₹10,000 crore investment in the biopharmaceutical sector over the next five years, aiming to strengthen India’s pharmaceuticals industry. Biopharma, or biologics, consists of complex medicines produced from living cells, tissues, or organisms, rather than through chemical synthesis.
In addition, the Budget outlined interventions in six key areas, including manufacturing, strategic and frontier sectors, healthcare, and advanced technology. Sitharaman also highlighted the Semiconductor Mission 2.0, which will focus on producing equipment and materials tailored for full stack Indian intellectual property.
The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), an autonomous business division under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), is tasked with developing a sustainable semiconductor and display ecosystem.
The Finance Minister further announced support for mineral rich states including Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu to establish critical mineral facilities. She emphasised that “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” continues to be the government’s guiding principle in its development initiatives.
