Calcutta High Court Rejects Post-Result Change in NEET UG EWS Category

The court stresses that eligibility conditions cannot be altered after examination results and merit lists have been declared.

KOLKATA, Sep 14: The Calcutta High Court has ruled that candidates appearing for NEET UG 2026 cannot seek inclusion in the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category after the declaration of examination results and publication of the merit list.

The ruling came in a matter involving candidates who sought a change in their category after the examination process had been completed. The court held that allowing such changes at a later stage could affect the fairness and transparency of the admission process.

The decision underlines the importance of candidates ensuring that their category claims and supporting documents meet the applicable requirements at the appropriate stage of the examination and admission process.

The court’s observation is significant for medical aspirants as counselling and admissions progress across states and institutions. Candidates have been advised to carefully verify their eligibility and documentation before completing examination and counselling formalities.
