CBI Questions Anil Ambani for 7+ Hours in RCom Loan Fraud Investigation
Industrialist interrogated on alleged fund diversion and irregularities as probe into Reliance Communications loans continues
New Delhi: The CBI on Friday questioned industrialist Anil Ambani for more than seven hours in connection with a Rs 2,929-crore cheating case involving Reliance Communications Ltd (RCom), officials said. The case, filed on a complaint by the State Bank of India (SBI), alleges misappropriation of loan funds and irregularities in credit facilities sanctioned to the company.
Ambani, arriving at the CBI headquarters at around 10 am, was interrogated until approximately 5:15 pm. The questioning covered alleged fund diversion, misrepresentation, and other irregularities, with Ambani confronted with multiple documents during the session. This was his second consecutive day of questioning in the ongoing probe.
The CBI had booked Ambani and RCom in August last year, alleging criminal conspiracy, cheating, and criminal breach of trust. According to SBI, the company had an outstanding debt of over Rs 40,000 crore to various lenders, with the public sector bank facing a loss of Rs 2,929 crore. Ambani has denied all allegations, maintaining that he was a non-executive director at the time and had no involvement in day-to-day operations.
Separately, the CBI examined Divy Dangi, a whole-time director at Authum Investment & Infrastructure Ltd, which has taken over assets of Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd and Reliance Home Finance Ltd. This probe relates to a Rs 57.47-crore fraud involving the Bank of Maharashtra.
Ambani’s residence, ‘Sea Wind’ at Cuffe Parade, Mumbai, was also searched as part of the investigation. His spokesperson reiterated that the industrialist will fully cooperate with authorities while defending himself legally. The matter remains sub-judice, with proceedings pending before the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) and other judicial forums, including the Supreme Court.
