Gen Chauhan calls for enhanced defence measures and training to tackle biological and radiological threats
Delhi, Sep 30: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan on Tuesday urged the armed forces to strengthen preparedness against bio threats and radiological contamination from nuclear weapons, highlighting the evolving security challenges in the post COVID era.
Addressing the Scientific Session on the 100th Raising Day of the Military Nursing Service (MNS) at the Manekshaw Centre, Delhi Cantt., Gen Chauhan said, “Bio threats, man made, accidental, or natural, are likely to increase in the future. Defence against such threats and treatment of infected persons require different protocols. We must be prepared.”
He emphasized the importance of training against radiological contamination, noting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for an undeterred India against nuclear blackmail. “Preparedness against nuclear threats contributes to deterrence. Radiological contamination requires specific treatment protocols and must be integrated into our training,” the CDS added.
Gen Chauhan also lauded the Military Nursing Service, which has served the nation for 100 years. He stressed the need to focus on the emotional and psychological well being of nurses, calling them the “heartbeat of healthcare.” He highlighted MNS’s unique ability to promote jointness across Army, Navy, and Air Force, ensuring seamless deployment of nursing personnel across services.
Established in 1926, the MNS continues to play a critical role in the Indian Armed Forces, providing medical care in frontline conflicts, humanitarian missions, and challenging operational environments.
