Celebrating Sporting Talent: Udhampur & Reasi Climbing Championships Fosters Youth Participation

Medal Tally Soars: Nat'l Academy High School and Aryan Oriental Convent Excel in Climbing Contest

Jammu 05-05-2024: Prince Thakur of National Academy High School, Udhampur bagged the first Gold medal in the Junior Boys category of the Udhampur & Reasi District Sport Climbing Competitions which were organized today at Sprawling Buds ICSE School, Bantalab, here. The Silver and Bronze medals were claimed by Mikhul Tripathi of National Academy High School, Udhampur and Jitenderjeet Singh of Aryan Oriental Convent Higher Secondary School, Udhampur.  

Similarly, in the Junior Boys category of Reasi District, there was good competition among Tanvir Ahmad, Krish Singh, and Pawan Singh of Amba Kids Home, Panthal, Katra in which Tanvir Ahmad emerged victorious. Krish Sharma and Pawan Singh clinched the Silver and Bronze medals.

Competitions in the Mini Girls and Mini Boys categories of the Udhampur district were completely dominated by climbers of Aryan Oriental Convent who bagged all the medals in these categories. Whereas Kovia Rajput, Ishika Thakur, and Aliya Ilahi secured the first three positions in the Mini girls categories, Mohd Adil,, Divyansh Verma and Tanish were the winners in the Mini Boys categories.

However, climbers of National Academy High School, Udhampur came back very strongly in the Sub Junior Girls category and swept all the medals with Peehu Sharma, Sunaina Sharma and Ira Singh securing the first three positions.

Almost similarly, in the Sub Junior Boys and Junior Girls categories of Udhampur District competition the first two positions in both categories were secured by climbers of National Academy High School and the third positions were clinched by climbers of Aryan Oriental Convent. While Samaksh Sharma and Anurag Sharma of National Academy High School clinched the first and second positions in the Sub unior Boys category the third position was bagged by Saiman of Aryan Oriental Convent School. In the Junior Girls category, the first three positions were bagged by Rupali Thakur, Khushi Sharma and Sanvi Sharma respectively               

  However, competitions in the Men and Women categories of both the districts could not be held for lack of adequate participation.  

 Earlier, the championship in which about 112 climbers of Udhampur district and 68 of Reasi District participated was declared open by the President of the District Mountaineering Association, Udhampur Verinder Slathia, a former JKAS officer,  in the presence of the Chairman of Sprawling Buds ICSE School Rahul Sharma who is also Patron of Tawi Trekkers J&K; Shawetica Khajuria, General Secretary; Ram Khajuria, Sr. Vice President and Sumit Khajuria, Vice President of Mountaineering Association of J&K. Upkar Singh, Vice President, Mallikarjun Singh Joint Secretary of District Mountaineering Association, Udhampur International climbers Shivani, Shilpa Chark and Arun Deep Singh; Sonam Sidharth, General Secretary and Navneet Gupta, Vice President District Mountaineering Association, Jammu were also among prominent persons present on the occasion.

The Chief Guest Verinder Slathia keenly watched the performance of each climber and remained present there during the conduct of the whole competition throughout the day. In the valedictory function he along with Guest of Honour Rahul Sharma presented medals to the winners of the various categories. 

While addressing the gathering the Chief Guest lauded the role of the Mountaineering Association of J&K in promoting sport climbing in the Union Territory of J&K  and producing national and international climbers like Shivani Charak and assured all possible help and cooperation for further promotion of the game in J&K and hoped that J&K would produce more international climbers and medalists.

Both championships were organized by the Mountaineering Association of J&K and sponsored by the J&K Sports Council.
