New Delhi, Sep 19: The Centre has started discussions with hospitals and other stakeholders over the pricing of medical consumables, amid concerns about significant differences between manufacturing costs and prices charged to patients.
The move follows concerns raised by the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration Commissioner regarding pricing practices in the medical sector. The government is examining ways to rationalise trade margins on medical devices and consumables used in hospitals.
Officials are consulting representatives from the healthcare industry and private hospitals as part of the process. The discussions are aimed at examining existing pricing structures and identifying measures that could improve transparency and affordability for patients.
Medical consumables form an important part of hospital treatment costs and include products routinely used during diagnosis, surgery and other medical procedures. Any changes in their pricing could have implications for both healthcare providers and patients.
