Centre Rules Out Any Proposal to Change Retirement Age of Government Employees

New Delhi, Mar 19: The central government has confirmed that there is no proposal under consideration to alter the retirement age of government employees. Union Minister of State for Personnel, Jitendra Singh, made this clarification in a written response in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. Addressing concerns on the matter, he reiterated that the government has no plans to amend the existing retirement age framework.

Singh also dismissed any speculation regarding the abolition of vacancies arising from employee retirements, affirming that there is no such policy in place. He stated that the government continues to fill vacant positions as per existing norms and requirements.

Responding to a query on whether any government employees’ unions or organizations had formally sought a change in retirement age, Singh confirmed that no official proposal had been submitted by the staff side of the National Council (Joint Consultative Machinery).

When asked to provide details on the retirement age policies across various central and state government departments, as well as the reasons for variations in retirement age among states, Singh clarified that the central government does not maintain a consolidated record of such data. He noted that the matter of retirement age falls under the jurisdiction of state governments, which determine policies independently based on their administrative and financial considerations.

This statement comes in response to ongoing debates and public discussions regarding possible changes in retirement age, ensuring that government employees and stakeholders have clarity on the issue.
