Centre Seeks Detailed Report After Rajasthan C-Section Deaths Trigger National Concern

Union Health Ministry begins comprehensive review as maternal healthcare standards come under renewed scrutiny following multiple post-surgery fatalities.

New Delhi, June 28: The Union Government has sought a detailed report from the Rajasthan Government following a series of maternal deaths allegedly linked to caesarean section procedures at healthcare facilities in the state. The move comes amid growing concern over patient safety, medical infrastructure and adherence to standard treatment protocols.

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has directed state authorities to submit a comprehensive account of the incidents, including the circumstances surrounding the surgeries, post-operative care, infection control measures and the availability of emergency medical support.

The issue gained national attention after reports emerged that several women died following C-section deliveries within a short period. The incidents have prompted calls for a transparent investigation into whether the deaths resulted from negligence, systemic failures or other medical complications.

Officials said the Centre would carefully examine the findings before deciding whether further intervention or a specialised medical audit would be required. A team of experts may also be deputed if necessary to independently assess the functioning of the concerned hospitals.

Health authorities stressed that maternal safety remains a national priority under various public healthcare programmes. Over the years, India has significantly reduced its maternal mortality ratio through improved institutional deliveries, expanded healthcare coverage and enhanced monitoring systems. However, isolated incidents of medical lapses continue to raise questions regarding implementation at the ground level.

Medical experts believe that while caesarean sections are generally safe when performed under proper clinical conditions, poor sterilisation, delayed diagnosis of complications, inadequate monitoring and shortage of trained personnel can significantly increase risks for patients.

The Centre has asked state officials to examine every aspect of the reported deaths, including operation theatre protocols, antibiotic administration, blood availability, emergency referral mechanisms and post-operative observation procedures.

Public health specialists say maternal healthcare quality depends not only on infrastructure but also on timely diagnosis, trained specialists, nursing support and strict infection control practices. They have emphasised the need for regular audits of surgical facilities across government and private hospitals.

The developments have also renewed discussions on improving accountability in healthcare institutions. Several experts have called for periodic clinical audits, better reporting systems and strengthened supervision of hospitals handling high-risk pregnancies.

The Rajasthan Government has assured full cooperation with the Centre and stated that all necessary information is being compiled. Authorities have indicated that disciplinary action will be taken if any negligence or violation of medical protocols is established.

Healthcare organisations have meanwhile appealed for restraint until the inquiry is completed, noting that complications can arise even in properly managed surgical procedures. However, they agreed that every maternal death deserves a thorough scientific investigation to identify preventable factors and improve patient safety.

The Union Health Ministry is expected to review the state’s findings before recommending further corrective measures aimed at strengthening maternal healthcare services nationwide.
