Chhath Puja 2025 to Boost India’s Economy with Rs 38,000 Crore Trade: CAIT

Festival of Sun God boosts local trade, cottage industries, and pan Indian economic activity

Mumbai, Oct 24 : The upcoming Chhath Puja 2025, dedicated to worshipping the Sun God, is set to generate around Rs 38,000 crore in trade across India, marking a 22.58% rise from last year’s Rs 31,000 crore, according to the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT).

Celebrated over four days with devotion and grandeur, Chhath Puja has grown beyond a spiritual festival to become a significant driver of local trade and Swadeshi products, supporting artisans, small-scale industries, and local businesses. Around 150 million people are expected to participate in the festival rituals this year, which include fasting, bathing, and offering prayers to the setting and rising sun.

While Bihar remains the heartland of Chhath, the festival now enjoys a pan-Indian presence, symbolizing purity, discipline, and harmony with nature. In Delhi alone, Chhath-related trade is projected to exceed Rs 6,000 crore, with 1,500 ghats prepared to welcome devotees. Prominent locations like Yamuna Ghat, Kalindi Kunj, Wazirabad, and Geeta Colony have been specially decorated to accommodate large crowds.

Across India, markets are bustling as devotees purchase essentials such as bamboo baskets, earthen lamps, sugarcane, fruits, sweets, sarees, utensils, and puja items. Most of these products are handmade by local artisans, providing a boost to the cottage industry and creating employment opportunities.

CAIT Secretary General Praveen Khandelwal said, “Chhath Puja is not just a religious festival; it reflects India’s cultural unity and social harmony. It supports local traders and aligns with the vision of ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat.’”

He further highlighted that the festival promotes cleanliness, environmental awareness, and self-discipline, making Chhath one of India’s most holistic and economically impactful festivals.
