Chhattisgarh Student Dies by Suicide at KIIT University, Odisha Third Case in Nine Months

Chhattisgarh Student Found Dead at KIIT, Odisha; Third Suicide at University in Nine Months

Bhubaneswar, Dec 01 : A first year computer science student from Chhattisgarh, Rahul Yadav, was found dead in his hostel room at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar, on Sunday night, marking the third reported suicide at the university in less than nine months. His body was discovered hanging from the ceiling fan after hostel authorities broke open the locked room.

Senior police officials confirmed that prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide, with further investigations underway to determine the exact circumstances and motive behind the tragedy.

This incident follows two previous suicides at the private university earlier this year. In February, a 20-year-old engineering student from Nepal was found dead in her hostel room, which sparked widespread protests among students and drew international attention, including condemnation from Nepal’s Prime Minister and diplomatic channels. Despite a high level inquiry committee being set up by the Odisha government, the findings of that probe remain undisclosed.

In May, another 20 year old Nepalese student allegedly committed suicide in a similar manner, intensifying concerns about student welfare and mental health support at the university.
