Chidambaram Says US Midterm Polls Offer a Lesson for Supporters of Democracy

Former Union minister says liberalism, secularism and tolerance emerged as key themes in the American elections, urging supporters of democracy to draw lessons from the outcome.

NEW DELHI, Nov 6: Senior Congress leader and former Union minister P Chidambaram on Friday described the outcome of the US midterm elections as a reflection of the importance of liberalism, secularism and tolerance, saying the results carried a significant message for people aspiring to live in a free and democratic society.

His remarks came after the Democratic Party registered major victories in the November 3 elections, securing control of both chambers of the US Congress and making gains in several states previously considered Republican strongholds.

In a post on social media platform X, Chidambaram said the American elections were conducted against the backdrop of intense political rhetoric surrounding illegal immigration, alleged migration-related threats involving Asians and Latin Americans, and Islamophobic narratives.

He observed that such issues threatened to overshadow everyday concerns affecting ordinary citizens, including the rising cost of living, unemployment, fuel prices and law and order.

“Eventually, liberalism, secularism and tolerance — and the basic democratic sense and spirit of America — triumphed,” the former Union minister said.

Emphasising the broader significance of the electoral outcome, Chidambaram added that there was a lesson for everyone who wished to be a citizen of a free and democratic country.

The election results dealt a major setback to US President Donald Trump and his Republican Party, which lost control of both the Senate and the House of Representatives to the Democrats.

Republicans also suffered setbacks in several gubernatorial contests, including in Texas, Georgia, Iowa and Ohio, where Democratic candidates secured victories.

The party faced difficult contests in Senate races across Texas, Maine, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kansas, Iowa and Ohio, despite Trump’s active campaigning.

During the campaign, Trump had urged voters to treat the congressional elections as a referendum on his presidency, asking them to imagine that his name appeared on the ballot.

The Democratic victories were widely linked to voter dissatisfaction over economic conditions, particularly the rising cost of living and fuel prices. The ongoing conflict involving Iran and its impact on energy markets also emerged as an important issue during the campaign.

Chidambaram’s comments placed particular emphasis on the relationship between political discourse and the everyday concerns of citizens, highlighting his view that democratic values and tolerance remained important considerations in electoral politics.
