Icy Blanket Over Srinagar: Severe Coldwave Tightens Hold, Kashmir Valley Feels the Chill

Srinagar, 28-12-2023 : The grip of severe cold in the Kashmir Valley has intensified, with Srinagar experiencing a chilling temperature of -3.3°C and Pahalgam at -5.2°C on Thursday. Pulwama in south Kashmir recorded the lowest temperature at -6.4°C, followed by Konibal (-6.2°C), Bandipora in north Kashmir (-5.9°C), Shopian (-5.6°C), and Ganderbal (-5.5°C) in central Kashmir.

Dense fog continues to envelop Srinagar and other parts of the Kashmir valley, causing disruptions in normal life. The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar reported a further dip in the minimum temperature in Srinagar on Thursday, reaching -3.3°C compared to the -2.6°C recorded the previous night. This was 1.2°C below the normal temperature for this season in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

The maximum temperature rose to 0.3°C above the normal of 7.9°C, reaching 8.2°C in Srinagar the previous day. Qazigund on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway saw a minimum temperature of -3.8°C, down from -3.2°C the previous night, while Kokernag recorded -2.0°C, a slight decrease from -2.2°C a day ago.

Pahalgam witnessed a temperature drop to -5.4°C on Thursday compared to -4.6°C the previous night, remaining 0.2°C below the normal for this tourist destination in south Kashmir. Gulmarg experienced a slight improvement at -2.6°C compared to -2.8°C the previous day, with a temperature 3.6°C above normal for the renowned ski resort in North Kashmir.

Kupwara’s temperature dipped to -4.3°C, down from -4.2°C the previous night, remaining 1.8°C below normal for the north Kashmir district, as reported by the Meteorological office.

The weather is expected to stay dry with moderate to dense fog over Central Kashmir, the Plains of Baramulla, Ganderbal, and Pulwama districts until the end of the month, according to the Meteorological office. There is a possibility of light snow over higher reaches during the evening or night on New Year’s Eve over Jammu and Kashmir.

The weather is predicted to remain generally dry during January 1–2, 2024, with a chance of light rain or snow in scattered places on January 3–4, as per the Meteorological office.
