CJI Surya Kant: One or Two SC Benches Likely to Hear Urgent Cases on December 22

Supreme Court to convene for urgent matters on first day of Christmas New Year break registry to verify case urgency

New Delhi, Dec 19: Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Friday announced that he is willing to sit on December 22, the first day of the Supreme Court’s Christmas and New Year holidays, to hear urgent cases.

A bench led by CJI Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M. Pancholi, said the apex court registry will assess the urgency of matters and list them accordingly.

“We will sit on Monday. We are not going to burden other Supreme Court judges, who have to study case files late at night for new cases. I will not bother any other bench,” CJI Kant said, emphasizing that the registry will determine which matters require urgent hearing.

He added, “We are not sure whether one or two benches will sit; it will depend on the number of cases. Appropriate orders for constitution of the bench will be passed accordingly.”

The bench also instructed junior lawyers seeking urgent listing to argue their matters on December 22. “We will hear this case on Monday only if you argue your matter,” CJI Kant told a junior lawyer.

The Supreme Court will remain closed for Christmas and New Year holidays from December 22, 2025, to January 2, 2026.
