Clashes Erupt After El Mencho’s Killing Indian Embassy Urges Nationals in Mexico to Shelter Indoors

Security operations and cartel-linked unrest spread across multiple Mexican states following military action

MEXICO CITY, Feb 23: The Indian Embassy in Mexico has issued a shelter advisory to Indian nationals after widespread violence erupted in several regions following the killing of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho.”

The embassy urged citizens to remain indoors and avoid non-essential travel as security forces continue operations in affected areas. The advisory specifically applies to residents in Jalisco including Puerto Vallarta, Chapala and Guadalajara as well as parts of Tamaulipas, Michoacan, Guerrero and Nuevo Leon.

In a statement, the mission cautioned against travelling near law enforcement activity and asked nationals to monitor local media for updates. It also advised people to avoid crowds, limit outdoor movement, follow instructions from local authorities and dial 911 in case of emergency. Citizens were encouraged to stay in touch with family and friends regarding their safety.

Military operation triggers unrest

The advisory follows a military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, where Mexican security forces engaged in a gun battle with members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). According to official statements, four cartel members were killed during the confrontation, while Oseguera and two others succumbed to injuries while being transported to Mexico City. Three soldiers were reported injured and shifted for medical treatment.

Oseguera, a former police officer, had led the CJNG’s expansion into one of the most powerful criminal networks in Mexico. He was wanted by US authorities, who had announced a reward of up to USD 15 million for information leading to his capture. In 2022, the US Justice Department charged him with overseeing fentanyl production and trafficking operations linked to the United States.

Violence spreads beyond Jalisco

Following the operation, suspected criminal groups set vehicles ablaze, blocked highways and clashed with authorities in several states. Jalisco Governor Pablo Lemus Navarro confirmed that disturbances began locally before spreading to neighbouring regions, including Michoacan and Guanajuato.

Public transport services were temporarily suspended in parts of Jalisco, and residents were advised to stay indoors until stability is restored. Authorities also warned against highway travel as security measures continue.

Officials have indicated that federal forces remain deployed across sensitive areas to contain further escalation.
