CM Omar Abdullah Urges Artificial Snow in Gulmarg to Secure Winter Sports and Boost Tourism

Gulmarg, Feb 23: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday highlighted the pressing need for artificial snow generation in Gulmarg to sustain winter sports and strengthen the region’s tourism industry amid unpredictable snowfall patterns caused by climate change.

Speaking at the opening of the Khelo India Winter Games, CM Abdullah welcomed athletes and stressed the importance of adapting winter sports infrastructure to changing weather conditions. He said relying solely on natural snowfall is no longer viable and urged the implementation of artificial snow systems to ensure consistent sporting activities and safeguard the livelihoods of thousands dependent on winter tourism, including hoteliers, guides, transport operators, and small businesses.

The Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to developing Gulmarg as a premier international skiing hub. He also encouraged local athletes, praising skier Arif Khan for his achievements, and expressed hope that the games would produce more talent from Jammu and Kashmir. Abdullah emphasized that participation and skill development remain as important as winning medals and highlighted that sustained investment in sports and tourism will enhance the region’s global appeal while supporting economic stability for the community.
