Cold Wave Grips J&K and Ladakh; Shopian Records -8.2°C, Pulwama -8°C
Sub-zero temperatures persist across Kashmir Valley and Ladakh, with Drass recording an extreme low of -24.6°C; authorities urge residents to take precautions.
Srinagar, Jan 10: Harsh winter conditions continued unabated across Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, with widespread sub-zero temperatures recorded during the night of Friday and Saturday.
In the Kashmir Valley, Shopian emerged as the coldest place at minus 8.2°C, closely followed by Pulwama at minus 8°C. Pahalgam recorded minus 7.8°C, Sopore minus 7.6°C, and Srinagar Airport dipped to minus 7.2°C. The minimum temperature in Srinagar city settled at minus 5.7°C, while Qazigund and Kupwara recorded minus 6.3°C and minus 6.1°C respectively. Gulmarg, the popular tourist destination, registered minus 6.8°C.
Cold conditions also persisted in the Jammu region, especially in higher-altitude areas. Bhaderwah recorded minus 2.8°C, Samba and Rajouri minus 1.6°C, Banihal minus 0.4°C, and Udhampur 0.2°C. Jammu city recorded a low of 3.6°C, with Katra at 5.2°C.
Ladakh continued to face extreme cold, with Drass registering the region’s lowest temperature at minus 24.6°C. Nyoma recorded minus 20.3°C, Padum minus 19.6°C, Hanle minus 17°C, Leh minus 14.4°C, Kargil minus 13.7°C, Nubra Valley minus 13.5°C, and Tangste minus 17.7°C.
Meteorologists have warned that these severe winter conditions are likely to persist in the coming days. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the extreme cold, especially in high-altitude and sub-zero regions.
