The Lok Sabha Secretariat swiftly revoked his disqualification, allowing him to once again assume his parliamentary duties. The Congress party rejoiced at this development, heralding it as a “Victory of love against hate” on their official platforms.
Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification had taken place on March 23, following a Gujarat court’s conviction in a defamation case, which resulted in a two-year prison sentence. Under the law, any lawmaker sentenced to two years or more automatically faces disqualification from parliamentary office. However, the Supreme Court’s timely intervention and stay on his conviction altered the course of events, granting him the opportunity to participate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and rekindle his electoral aspirations.
