Congress Central Election Committee Zeroes in on Candidates Amid Growing Momentum for J&K Polls

Congress CEC Finalizes Initial Candidates for Crucial J&K Assembly Polls, More Discussions to Follow

New Delhi, 23-08-2024: The Congress Central Election Committee convened in New Delhi to discuss and narrow down potential candidates for the forthcoming Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections. Although a few candidates were finalized during this meeting, sources indicate that the committee plans to reconvene soon for further deliberation on additional candidates. The meeting was attended by prominent party figures, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, former party leader Rahul Gandhi, Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Tariq Hameed Karra, Screening Committee Chairperson Sukhjinder Randhawa, and senior leaders Ambika Soni and Salman Khurshid.

This significant gathering followed the announcement of a pre-poll alliance between the Congress and the National Conference, marking the first assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. On Friday, National Conference Vice-President Omar Abdullah confirmed that the seat-sharing arrangement with Congress had been finalized for most constituencies in the region, with discussions ongoing for the remaining seats. The alliance was officially declared by National Conference President Farooq Abdullah after meetings between Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and the leadership of the regional party on Thursday.

The upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir are scheduled to take place in three phases, on September 18, September 25, and October 1, with the vote counting slated for October 4.
